Learning about Martin Luther King Jr.

1/22/2014

We spent time last week, and will continue this week, to learn about Martin Luther King Jr. and the things he did for our country.  We read a few books about his life including My Brother Martin and Martin's Big Words. We also watched parts of his famous I Have A Dream speech.  The video can be found below if you would like to view it again or watch sections of it with your child at home.

A few of the key points (famous lines) can be heard at these times if you want to seek them out:

-7:05 minutes in you can hear the following: "
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

-7:53 minutes in you can hear the following: "
I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama... little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today!"

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.  Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education."- Martin Luther King Jr.

We received a wonderful letter and pictures from the troops we sent holiday cards to!  Below you can read their response, which explains what their job in the military is.  You can also see pictures of them reading the cards that were sent from various classes throughout our school.  We are so excited they wrote back to us!  The representative for this project also took pictures of our class and all the other classes who made cards so that the troops can have our pictures as well!
